2024 Lantern Project in Morocco

We produced the lanterns for this Morocco project: a large owl entrance feature, illuminated garden plants and a collection of animal and fantasy figures. See the pieces in their outdoor setting and the workshop work behind them.

Lantern production

Ocean Art Lantern made the lantern installations shown here for the 2024 Morocco project. The collection ranges from the broad owl head above the entrance to individual flowers, mushrooms, insects and larger sculptural groups on the lawn.

The entrance combines a recognizable face with floral columns and smaller figures. Inside the venue, the lantern groups sit across the open grass, with paths between them. This gives each scene room to be seen as a whole while allowing a closer view of the smaller pieces.

On site

Flowers, mushrooms and glowing crystal forms

Oversized mushrooms with hanging lights rise above the lower flowers. Along another edge of the garden, curved stems and pointed crystal shapes create a different outline. The photographs show the lanterns illuminated at dusk, when their colors remain visible alongside the grass, trees and surrounding buildings.

Across the lawn

Distinct groups with their own shapes and details

A peacock opens its tail among spiral plants and small animal forms. Nearby, a tall patterned face creates a more vertical composition, with a multi-tailed fox and deer arranged around it. An ornate lamp, a winged creature and a curved carpet-shaped piece form another group.

These scenes use different proportions and surface patterns: the peacock’s repeated feather shapes, the layered face, and the sweeping wings are visible from farther away; the smaller flowers and figures add detail closer to the path.

The setting

The closer path view shows flowers and crystal forms beside the walkway. The short daytime video offers a wider view from the seating area: separate groups occupy the lawn rather than forming one continuous wall of lanterns.

From our workshop to the entrance

The owl before it reached the gate

The owl in the entrance photograph appears here illuminated in our workshop. Its pointed blue feather tufts, golden eye rings and patterned forehead carry across from the close workshop view to the finished entrance feature.

Seen at floor level, the head reveals the curved surface and detailed feather pattern. At the venue, it sits above the doorway, framed by plants and flowers. The two views show the same piece at different stages without losing the character of the face.

Making the lanterns

Frame, fabric and illuminated detail

Our project workshop photographs show the hands-on work behind the collection. A worker fits a flexible light strip along the insect-shaped frame. Fabric is worked around broad curved panels, and spiral plant lanterns are lit in the workshop with their supporting ribs and leaf forms visible.

The process has to accommodate very different shapes within one project. Fine frame lines define the insect, while the larger panels need a continuous surface around their curves. In the illuminated plants, those curves and ribs become part of the visible texture.

Our work, your next project

Bring a varied lantern collection to your venue

This project brings entrance decoration, large focal pieces and smaller garden lanterns together in one collection. If you are planning an outdoor display, tell us about your setting and the kinds of forms you would like to create. We can discuss the lantern work that suits your project.
